To begin our perfect family weekend, we would all check into the Boulevard All-Suites Hotel, overlooking Lake Michigan. We will have great sunsets in the evening, and the suite is big enough for the whole family, so we won't need two rooms. The hotel has a dining room, so we don't have to go traipsing about looking for breakfast.
The biggest attraction for a family in the summer will be Silver Beach. It's right down the steps on the bluff, so we won't even need to drive; we can walk down. This beach has volley ball nets for the teenagers in the family, and both toddler and older children playgrounds. There is a nice concession stand that has the usual hotdogs, and so forth, but also serves nice wrap-style sandwiches. There is also a boardwalk on the beach. This boardwalk extends to the South Pier, and we can walk out there for a fabulous view and to see the boats. If you enjoy fishing, this can also be done from the pier.
Something new near the beach this summer is beautiful carousel. It is housed in a building that also has a children's museum, Curious Kids. (There is a second Curious Kids museum up next to the hotel. It is for younger children.) The other new thing this year is a Rose Compass Fountain. This is a huge fountain that children can play in.
After playing at the beach, everyone will want to stop for ice-cream at Kilwin's on State Street. This is just a couple of blocks from the Boulevard Hotel, as are dozens of other restaurants and shops.
It's hard to think of a more family-friendly town than St. Joseph, Michigan. |
