Description:
Anyone can join the home canning revolution when "Eat Local, Kalamazoo" presents a series of summer canning classes, covering everything from the basics to advanced techniques. The classes begin in June and continue through September.
Home canning, once a staple of American homes, is popular once again. Canning at home can cut household grocery bills, and it reduces a family's carbon footprint created by distributing vegetables, fruits, sauces, jams, jellies and other food items during the off-season. In addition, home canning allows families to preserve exactly what they enjoys eating - the process itself can even be a fun activity.
All weekday classes are 5:30-8:30 p.m., and Saturday classes are 2:30-5:30 p.m. Participants may take all or only some classes in either series. "Eat Local, Kalamazoo" summer canning classes are $25 per class, or $100 for either series. Some partial scholarships are available.
Beginner's classes June 9, July 17, August 17 and September 18
Advanced classes June 16, July 21, August 21 and September 25
